What is Compassion Fatigue?
Leaders in the field answer this question and briefly describe this relatively new term. Video images of disasters communicate that those caring for suffering people are affected by the pain and trauma that they witness. Caregivers who are idealistic, highly empathic or new to their work are particularly vulnerable to the negative mental and physical symptoms described here.
Compassion Fatigue Exists in All the Professions
Research has proven that compassion fatigue is an occupational hazard, pervasive throughout the helping professions. Those who are highly empathic may be extremely effective at caring for people. They are also vulnerable to becoming obsessed with, and burdened by the suffering of others. Studies show that compassion fatigue is preventable and treatable.
